One Hundred Black Men, Inc. of New York (OHBM) remains committed to driving positive change in all NYC communities. Through our four pillars—education, mentoring, economic empowerment, and health and wellness—supporting the education of young men and women identified as potential leaders is central to our mission. Our dedication to education dates back to the founding of OHBM, from informal mentoring and the establishment of the first Eagle Academy in 2004 to our current scholarship program. Over the years, OHBM has directly and indirectly impacted the lives of thousands of young people.
The Scholarship Committee issues scholarships based on an interview of current black and brown male high school seniors, an essay, transcripts, and written recommendations. Once the 20+ scholarship recipients are selected, there are monthly mentorship meetings that follow a group and one-to-one mentorship model. The monthly mentorship meetings mainly focus on academics, financial literacy, and mental health. These sessions allow collegiate mentees to share their experiences with peers and get advice from mentors who have a track record for success.
In the past two years alone, OHBM has awarded $100,000 in college scholarships, with over $1 million distributed since the program’s inception. Awardees have gone on to study in the following areas: finance, business, film, political science, aviation, fashion design, and engineering (various concentrations).
Our next goal is to ensure that each scholarship recipient receives a paid corporate internship, helping them build their resumes and gain valuable experience for their future careers. With your continued support, we will provide scholarships and internships, fostering the next generation of leaders.
Scholarship applications open every spring and are generally submitted before June 1st.
